Rachna's Note
August 2004
Dear Reader,
Wow! It seems like I was just writing you- the time between
this issue and last month's has flown. I spent several days in the
early part of August visiting Las Vegas- it was my first time there,
and I'd tell you more about it, but you know what they say......
"what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"......
just teasing. It was actually pretty interesting-I liked it much more
than I thought I would. I visited the Venetian, MGM Grand,
Luxor, Excalibur, and, my favorite, the Bellagio.I also caught the
Monet exhibit while it was there- absolutely gorgeous- and,
overall, had a great time. I definitely recommend it as a
"must see" if you've never been there.
With all the frenetic activity on the Las Vegas Strip, it might
come as no surprise that this month's article talks about
creating an oasis of calm. I definitely needed a chance to
get all the desert air and neon out of my system.
As we move towards the end of summer, I hope you'll
take a few minutes to create an oasis of calm and, too,
check out some of the new opportunities and resources
I'll be rolling out over the next few issues.
See you next month!
Warmly,
Rachna

An Oasis of Calm
(c) 2004 Dr. Rachna D. Jain

This month, my focus has been on creating an oasis of
calm no matter how busy or frenetic life gets. Now, to be
honest, some days were better than others but overall by
focusing on creating calm I definitely got more of it.
If you are feeling at all stressed, hectic, or rushed by
your life and the demands of it take a few minutes (it
won't take longer that this, promise!) to read through
this article for some tips on how to create more calm in
your life and work.
Tip: If you're a person who feels overwhelmed by noise or
too much aural input consider turning off news radio and
talk shows for one day each week. Instead, use the silence
to be quiet, or think your own thoughts, rather than being
continually subjected to the noise of other people’s
opinions.
Tip: If you're in the car for long periods of time, use
this time to take a few deep breaths. I read an article
that said even 10 minutes of relaxed, deep breathing can
decrease your body’s cortisol levels by 50% or more.
Cortisol is a hormone released in times of stress, and
can cause increased fat deposits around your stomach.
So think of 10 minutes of deep breathing as another way
to fight the flab.
Tip: If your work demands caring for others, or you have
too much to do and not enough time, build in periodic
rest breaks. Rather than slowing you down you will actually
become more productive. Research has shown that people who
work for 45 minutes and take a 15 minute break are
significantly more creative and productive over time,
compared to those who don't.
Tip: Take a look at your diet. If you're eating a lot of
sugar and caffeine, it will be more difficult to feel,
and remain, calm.
Tip: If something in your life is a constant source of
stress and unhappiness find a way to change it. Change
the schedule, change the timing, change the focus,
change your thoughts - change something. You don't
have to live in a state of constant dissatisfaction
about anything.
Finally, enjoy the moments of calm. Savor them when
they show up. The more you focus on creating an oasis
of calm each day, the more calm and enjoyable your days
will be.
Be calm, and see you next month!

Have Questions? Get Answers!
Jeff writes:
Q: I own a small business and have a family. It's tough for
me to find time to get everything done - I can't seem to set
priorities and I keep moving from thing to thing, not really
accomplishing anything. Any ideas?
A: Hi, thanks for your email. From what you wrote, it sounds
like you have a very full plate and very big plans. One
technique that has helped me prioritize is to set aside
certain days of the week for dealing with various kinds of
work. So, for example, I work directly with clients on Monday
& Tuesday, and, in between, I might attend to inquiries, and
also set up a few new client consults - so Monday & Tuesday
are my main client days. On Wednesdays, I normally work on
writing articles, newsletters, and new books. On Thursdays,
I work on marketing/promotion, and Friday is a catch-all
day - allowing me to wrap up/clean up anything remaining from
the week. Another idea that might help is that you might want
to scale back on your plans, where you can. Sometimes, we have
trouble prioritizing because we have taken on really big tasks
which can't be accomplished in the amount of time we have
available. So you might be more effective if you start
ratcheting down your scope and starting to think of tasks
in 10-20 minute blocks (or whatever the largest block of
time you have is). Once you match up tasks to times, and
write these into your planner or calendar, you might find
it easier to make better use of the times you do have
available. Hope this helps, and good luck!
