Rachna's Note
December 2003
Dear Reader,
Hello and Welcome to December. It's funny to think
that 2003 is almost over - the year has flown by.
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for
your generous participation and support as a valued
subscriber to this newsletter. It is wonderful to
hear from so many of you each month who are sharing
your appreciation of the articles and concepts we
cover. I enjoy this part the best. :)
I hope that this month's article will help you
find a way to balance the stress and excitement
of the holiday season with your year end and
future planning. The idea of "balancing the
triangle" (see below) has been very helpful
to many people.
I want to take this opportunity to wish you and
yours a wonderful rest of 2003 and an even
more magical 2004.
See you next year!
Warmly,
Rachna

Thoughts, Feelings, Actions - Balancing the Triangle

Do you think a thought that makes you feel? Or do
you feel a feeling that makes you think? Do you
act because you feel? Do you act because you think?
Yes.
Why bring this up? (Great question!). It can
sometimes be confusing to sort out which came
first: thought, feeling or action. Actions are
usually really obvious because they are outward.
But how do you sort through your internal
experience to get clear on what you want to do?
If you're anything like me, you tend to be an
action oriented kind of person. I notice that,
for myself, I'm always moving into new experiences
and out of old ones. I tend to accomplish a lot
each day and usually do this with a sense of
joyful efficiency. However, sometimes I start
taking actions before I've gotten really clear
on what I feel.
I think this happens because of lack of practice.
I'm very comfortable in the realm of thought and
intellect as I generally grasp essences very
quickly and am a good problem solver. I'm less
comfortable with the sometimes vagueness of
tapping into my feelings and being guided by
how I feel. This all feels a bit too "woo woo"
sometimes.
It's important, though, to think of thoughts,
feelings and actions as part of a triad and the
triad is most effective when it's balanced
between all three sides. This doesn't mean
that all three sides are of equal length. But
that they are dynamically balanced so that you
can move about the angles and tap into the
wisdom available from each of the respective
parts.
As a coach, I also use the triad/triangle
metaphor in working with my clients. I will
often point out to a client when I notice that
his/her "triangle" is a bit out of whack (lots
of feeling or thinking but no action). I then
suggest that the client try to get the triangle
a little more even - and to be flexible about
how this occurs.
I have noticed great shifts in the little
exercise of "balancing the triangle" around
an important issue. Try it for yourself.
Until next month,
Rachna
