Rachna's Note
February 2005
Dear Reader,
Well, I meant to get this out to you in time for
Valentine's Day, but saw that every other ezine
publisher seemed to have the same idea!
Since that's the case, allow me to share some
thoughts on relationships - all kinds - now that
the Valentine's Day commotion seems to have
died down.
I hope you enjoy this issue, and see you next month!
Warmly,
Rachna

Building Healthy Relationships

Relationships have been on my mind a lot lately,
maybe because it’s February- the month of
Valentine’s Day. While this holiday is mostly
focused on romantic love, the skills of good
relating are basically the same across all
kinds of human relationships- whether they
be husband/wife, parent/child, brother/sister,
or friend/friend.
The basic unit of relating, according to
relationship researcher John Gottman,Ph.D, is
the “bid”. A bid is defined as a request for
connection between two people. Bids can be
non-verbal, like hugging, touching, opening
doors, passing the salt- or they can be verbal,
like asking questions, requesting information,
or sharing ideas. Gottman says that healthy
relationships have a greater number of bids-
more attempts to connect and relate-than
unhealthy ones during the same time period.
When a bid is received positively and responded
to positively, repeat bids are more likely
to occur. When a bid is rejected or ignored,
the likelihood that it will be repeated drops
sharply. People are not that likely to try
again when they feel rejected.
Along the same lines, a recent study coming
out of the University of Warwick in England
states that being happily married has economic
benefits- with happily married folks generally
earning more money and reporting greater
satisfaction with their financial prospects.
The researchers estimated that a good marriage
was like making an extra $100,000 per year.
What both these examples demonstrate is that
good relationships are an important component
of ongoing life satisfaction- in many realms.
Since the focus of this newsletter is on strategies
for excelling with ease, it occurs to me that
building and maintaining strong interpersonal
connections can give us great benefits in many
life domains- we feel happier, more connected,
more at peace, maybe we are more successful,
do better financially, and feel more hopeful
about the future.
In this month of Valentine’s Day, with all the
focus on love and loving—maybe you can take some
extra time to respond positively to bids for your
time, attention and affection this month. In
doing so, you might notice that you feel happier,
more contented, and more joyful.
Focus on building healthy relationships, and you
will find that excelling with ease comes much
more naturally.
Happy February, and see you next month!
