Rachna's Note
April 2004
Dear Reader,
Hi and Welcome to our April issue. For those who
honored Passover and/or Easter, I hope these events
were peaceful and joyful for you. For those who
don't observe these events, I hope you've been
peaceful and joyful, anyway. :)
This issue is about a week late because I've caught
a bit of spring fever. I'm busy rearranging my work
so there's more time for play.
This month's article focuses on building resilience,
which is an important life asset no matter what your
life circumstance. I hope you enjoy it- see you
next month!
Warmly,
Rachna

Building Resilience

This month, I’ve noticed that many of my clients
are working on building resilience. They are
practicing new ways of thinking and acting which
are helping them to be more successful at meeting
the demands of their lives.
Since I believe that whatever is showing up in
my coaching sessions is a microcosm of what the
larger community is experiencing, I wanted to
focus this month’s article on strategies for
building resilience.
If you, like me, find that the world sometimes
moves way too quickly and that you are sometimes
being asked to do more with fewer resources (less
time, money, assistance), it’s time to take a
look at your resilience and see how it can be
built.
Most stress comes from hitting a point where
the input coming in is more than we can take.
Our threshold has been surpassed and we go into
a state of overwhelm. For some people,
unfortunately, overwhelm becomes a way of life
and these are the same people who experience a
greater frequency of life problems - both medical
and otherwise.
Luckily, there is a pretty simple technique for
immediately reducing stress. It’s called ‘taking
a break’. A break is defined as any activity which
rejuvenates or refreshes you and this will be
different for different people. If you were to
start interspersing periods of intense work with
short breaks, you will gradually raise your stress
threshold. In raising your stress threshold, you
will find yourself being able to achieve much more
without getting overwhelmed.
Similar to weight lifting, in which you work a
muscle to fatigue and then rest it, I believe we
can do a similar kind of training for our lives.
If you are ready to build your resilience, you can
get started by looking over your appointment book
or schedule and start to build in about 3-5 short
(10-15 minute) rest periods per day. Try to
intersperse these between tasks and schedule them
in. Once you've done that, allow yourself to take
the break. If you do, you'll notice an amazing
difference.
I’ve been using this strategy for about the past
6 weeks and have noticed that I'm more productive
with less effort. I'm finding that the journey is
just as enjoyable as reaching the destination.
This month, I'd invite you to try this simple
method for building resilience. The greater your
threshold for the uncertainties of life, the better
you'll be able to excel with ease.
