Rachna's Note

November 2004

Dear Reader,

Happy November. I hope this issue finds you well and
happy. One of the most important tools that can
assist you in evolving your life, and in being happier,
is the capacity to expand your range. To that purpose,
our new two issues will focus on tools and tips you
can use to expand your range.

This past month has been full of new opportunities
and so I'm a bit out of breath as I've been running
to keep up. I'm looking forward to spending the
Thanksgiving holiday with my family and to, well,
giving thanks!

I wish you all a wonderful holiday and look forward
to reconnecting with you next month.

Warmly,
Rachna

Expanding Your Range Part I

For the rest of 2004, we’re going to focus on the idea
of expanding your range. Expanding your range means
moving out of your comfort zone and stepping into a
greater sense of wonder and enthusiasm for what’s
possible for you to attain.

One of the greatest sources of frustration - for all of
us - is really, really wanting something that we don’t
believe we know how to get. This can be a secure
comfortable job, a healthy, loving relationship, a
prosperous business or vibrant good health. The reason
we want anything is because we believe it will make our
lives better. The reason we feel frustrated is because
we feel limited or unable to take the necessary actions
to reach out for what we desire.

This is where the idea of expanding your range comes in
handy. Simply, “expanding your range” means that you
slowly, gradually, start to increase the number of
possible alternatives to attain your goals. Let me offer
an example:

Sarah* really wanted to explore her creative side, maybe
through joining a community theater program. She wanted
a place to “try out” different roles, “try on” different
characters, and wanted to meet a new group of potential
friends. However, she also believed that she was “too shy”,
“too klutzy” and “too plain” to take part in community theater.
So, again, she wanted to attain something that she didn’t
believe she knew how to get.

In our work together, we focused on helping Sarah increase
her range, and how we did this, in part, was by breaking
down the process into small steps. First, Sarah did some
searches for community theaters in her neighborhood. Next,
she went to see some of the plays they put on. Third, she
observed a theater try-out. Fourth, she talked with some
of the actors and learned more about what they liked, what
their fears were, and why they acted in community theater.

At each step, Sarah got more information and more knowledge
which helped her increase both her intellectual under-
standing AND her feeling of emotionally capability - that
this, indeed, might be possible for her, too. The beauty of
this process is that no one step was too overwhelming and
she was able to proceed at a pace that felt right for her.

So how does this apply to you? This month, I’ll ask you to
think ahead to the first quarter of 2005 (I know, I know,
getting started early). Think about what you’d like to
create in the first quarter of 2005, in at least four
areas of your life. Jot these down, along with information
about where you’ll need to expand in order to allow these
goals to show up in your life.

Next month, we’ll talk about how to use these desired
outcomes and expand your range so you can achieve them.
