Rachna's Note
October 2004
Dear Reader,
Happy Birthday to me! It's my birthday month (I love October) and I'm
glad to have a chance to connect with you again. I can't believe how
fast this year is moving- it seems like not so long ago I was just
sending out the September issue.
This month, I invite you to find gratitude for the challenges you're
facing in your life. Many times, the bigger the goal, the greater
the challenges you face to reach it. Whatever you're trying to accomplish-
just know that you can attain all you want.
And, as a way of saying thanks, please feel free to check out
a birthday gift I've put together for you- it's in the opportunities
& resources section.
See you next month!
Warmly,
Rachna

Finding Gratitude in the Challenges

Have you ever noticed that, sometimes, life moves
along really slowly? You show up every day working
towards your dream whether it is a new job, a
promotion, a healthy body, lasting relationship,
being a good parent and yet, sometimes, change
doesn’t seem to be happening fast enough?
You show up every day, working for your desired
goal, and it seems like so many challenges,
annoyances and delays all line up to stop your
progress. Isn’t this really frustrating?
Many clients have been sharing a sense that they
are working a bit harder and that rewards seem to
be showing up more slowly than before. As we
discussed this in sessions it occurred to me that
maybe the rewards were showing up more slowly now
because the goals were so much bigger than before.
All big and important goals take a certain amount
of effort to reach. The bigger the goal, the greater
the challenges inherent in reaching it. So if you’re
finding that your goals are taking a bit longer to
come to fruition, I urge you to take three actions
right now. First, re-commit to what you want, and
why you want it. This should be easy.
Next, give thanks for all the challenges you’re
facing. Yes, you read that right - give thanks for
the challenges because they are an indication of
how big your goals are and how important they are
to reach. Challenges are only ever delivered in
direct proportion to the significance of the goal.
Give thanks that you’re a person with big goals and
big challenges - a person who deeply cares.
Finally, look for an easier way. Very often, we
step onto a path and pursue it wholeheartedly,
without stopping to consider that there might be
an easier way. If your most important goal keeps
being derailed, look to see if there is a way to
turn your biggest challenge into your biggest
opportunity.
By taking these three steps, you’ll be closer to
reaching your goals and feeling better while doing it.

"Dr. Rachna..I hope you can help me. I am thinking of changing
my job to a new field. What advice can you give me?"
A: Thanks for your email. You didn't mention what your current (or
future) jobs would be, so my advice will be fairly general. There
are a few ideas to remember when you are changing fields. First,
you want to get clear on what your transferable skills are- these
are skills that you learned in one field that might be valuable in
another. Examples might be: meeting planning, organizational skills,
public speaking, computer skills, networking skills, contacts,
communication skills. Second, you want to be clear on why
you're making the switch to a new field- employers want to know
what your motivations are. Put together a 10-15 word compelling
summary of why you're making the switch. Third, consider
finding a mentor in the field you want to join- s/he can be an
invaluable source of support and encouragement. Finally, don't
be discouraged- it might take some time to find a new position,
but if you stay positive and anticipate the best, you're very
likely to get it. Good luck!
