Focusing on What You Want

When was the last time that you absolutely,
positively knew what you wanted? Was it something
simple, and easy to obtain - maybe your favorite meal,
or to call a good friend? Or was it something a bit
more complex like a raise, a new job, or better
health?
Very often, when we want to achieve a goal, we begin
taking actions from a place of high energy and
excitement. We feel inspired and enthusiastic.
Somewhere along the way, though, this drains off,
and we sometimes are overcome by fear.
One of my clients, Jeff, came to coaching because
he wanted to find and keep a steady relationship.
Initially, he was a bit hesitant - uncertain if
coaching could help him reach his goal - however,
he was willing to give it a try. As we began to
move forward, he started to learn a lot about himself -
what he required, needed, and wanted in his closest
relationship - and he began to see how, in the past,
he had sabotaged what he most desired. He was very
committed to changing this pattern, and to making
his future relationships much better.
All this sounded great. End of coaching - right? Well,
no, not exactly. What Jeff began to experience, as
he continued to date, and screen, and sort potential
partners, was he sometimes felt overloaded by how
much work dating was turning out to be. He began
to feel hopeless and discouraged, and wondered if
he'd ever find "the one".
What do you think was going on for Jeff? He had
started to focus on what he didn't want rather
than what he did. He began to say, "I don't want
this to be too much work, I'm tired of doing this,
what if I never find someone?" which were all the
feelings/ experiences that he DIDN'T want to have.
A good clue to know when you're stuck here - if you're
thinking about something and it doesn't feel good.
If what you're thinking about doesn't feel good,
you're focused on something you do not want.
In Jeff's case, we began to help him shift his
thoughts into more of what he wanted - he began
to say "I want to find someone wonderful, who
is like this, and this, and this." "I feel
excited and hopeful about meeting new people,
because every date brings me closer to my goal."
It wasn't that this was a simple. It wasn't.
However, changing his focus to what he wanted
helped him feel more positive and hopeful. It
was this sense of optimism and focus on what he
wanted that, ultimately, helped Jeff attract a
wonderful woman, whom he is now dating exclusively.
Together, they are focused on what they want
their relationship to be, and it is moving along
very smoothly in this direction.
So, as you read this, you might be experiencing
something tough or challenging. If you want to
feel better, start focusing on what you do want -
a loving relationship, good health, joy - and
take actions from this place of feeling good.
You'll be surprised how quickly you start to get
what you focus on.
