Rachna's Note

January 2004

Dear Reader,

Happy New Year! As we move into the middle
of the first month of the year, I hope that
2004 is shaping up wonderfully for you.

I hope, too, that you've taken the time to
set some goals for this year but not
resolutions.

Instead, I invite you to set some New Year's
Inspirations- outcomes you aspire to for
the New Year.

This month's feature article describes
New Year's Inspirations in more detail.

I hope you enjoy it, and see you next month.

Warmly,

Rachna

New Year’s Inspirations

As we move into a New Year, the newspapers and
media are filled with information about New Year’s
Resolutions - how to set them, how to keep them,
and how to get back on track if (or when) you
break them.

In talking this over with several clients in the
past few weeks it’s becoming clearer to me why
many New Year’s Resolutions don't last past
February. This is what I've found:

First, most people set resolutions from a
negative slant, i.e., “I will not eat junk
anymore” or “I will not watch so much TV”. So
the resolutions are often about what you're
going to stop doing - not what you're going to
start doing. If you keep focus on what you will
stop doing it actually gets harder to stop
doing it. Have you ever decided that you weren't
going to eat something and then all you could
do was think about eating it? You know what I
mean.

Second, most people set resolutions from the
perspective of actions they will take, i.e.,
“I will not eat junk” or “I will exercise
every day”, rather than setting resolutions
from a feeling place, i.e., “I resolve to feel
good this year and I will eat better and
exercise everyday”. Doesn't setting resolutions
from a place of feeling seem different? To me,
it really allows you to encompass a much bigger
and more significant change much more easily.

Third, most people think of resolutions as
something they “have to” do. Most people don't
like to “have to” do anything. Instead, let me
offer the idea of setting New Year’s Inspirations
- changes that inspire you to aspire to. For
example: “I choose to be happy each day and to
support this desire, I'll eat well, exercise,
and get enough sleep”. Or “I aspire to be
promoted within 6 months so I'll start listing
all my accomplishments and talking with key
people in my organization.”

Finally, all successful New Year’s Inspirations
include both a desired feeling AND a series of
actions. As Einstein once said, (and this is
one of my favorite quotes) “Nothing happens
unless something moves.”

So, if you're planning to make some life changes
this year, I invite you to aspire to New Year’s
Inspirations!

See you next month,

Rachna
