Rachna's Note
June 2004
Dear Reader,
I hope this issue finds you well and enjoying- on the East Coast,
anyway- the start of summer.
It's been busy here, as I've just completed my next book,
"Get it Done Faster: Secrets of Dissertation Success"- which
is now available on pre-order for any of you who could
use some tips and hints for completing your dissertation.
As a special thank you for my subscribers, I'm offering
$4 off the cover price for pre-orders placed by June
30, 2004. Books will ship within the first two weeks of July.
And, don't worry, if you already own my first book, the
information presented here is not the same. The book has
gotten strong preliminary reviews from those who've seen it.
I hope you'll consider purchasing it for yourself or for
someone who might benefit.
Anyway, for those of you who aren't working on your
dissertations, I have several more books due out before
the end of this year. In each case, my newsletter
subscribers will receive special discounts on pre-orders,
so stay tuned.
In this issue, we touch upon the idea of asking for the best-
and very often getting it. I hope you enjoy it. Have a wonderful
rest of June, and see you next month.
Warmly,
Rachna

Only the Best

Lately, I’ve been thinking about many different ideas
to share with you in this newsletter. I decided, this
month, to focus on the idea of “Only the Best”. I have
a good friend who always chooses “Only the Best!” I’ve
had the opportunity to spend more time with her lately as
she recently moved back to the area after living elsewhere
for a while. Anyway, it’s been quite interesting to watch
how her desire for “Only the Best!” pretty much insures
that she gets just that.
I decided to try this out for myself. For a whole week
I practiced the idea of “Only the Best!” and this is what
I found. First, decisions were easier to make. When I
stayed focused on the best it was usually pretty clear what
what was. Second, I noticed that people were even more helpful
and generous than they usually are. Salespeople would go
searching – literally – for items I wanted that weren't on
the shelf. Everyone I ran into was extra helpful and extra
kind. Third, it was easier to be appropriately assertive
when situations weren't going “quite right” and, finally,
it was actually pretty fun.
I stayed focused on what would be best for me instead of
making decisions from a place of worry or “didn't want”.
I found that , each time, the outcome went exactly as I
hoped and sometimes went even better.
So how does this relate to you? I'd invite you, this month,
to try out the “Only the Best!” game for yourself. Be playful
and light with this but try it for one hour, one day, one
week or if you really like the idea do it for a whole month.
Ask for what you want, expect only the best and see that
you very often get just that. Or even something better.
Transform your attitude and you transform your life.
See you next month!

**New Feature**
Q: Rachna, I've heard a lot, recently, about Q cover letters.
What are these? I'm looking for a new job and one advertisement
asks for a "Q" cover letter. Can you help?
A: Absolutely. A "Q" letter or "Q cover letter" is a simple letter
that divides information into two columns. The left column lists
what the job requires (i.e. college degree, 10 years of experience)
and the right side lists how your qualifications meet or exceed that
required level. If you have multiple accomplishments, always
list the strongest ones - those that exceed the minimum required
levels wherever possible.
College Degree required Master's Degree held
5 years of supervisory experience 10 years of supervisory experience
And so on. You would start the cover letter with a brief introduction,
list all relevant points in this two column format, and then end with a
strong closing statement. The goal of a "Q" letter is to make it easy
for the potential employer to screen your resume and see that you
are a strong candidate for the job. Hope this helps, and good luck!
