Pain? No Gain.

Some years ago, there used to be a commercial that said,
"No Pain, No Gain". If you wanted to get something of value,
it's ok to suffer along the way. Do you ever find yourself
suffering your way through something, and then telling
yourself, "Well, it's for the greater good?" OR "There's
some meaning to this." OR "a little pain now will save me
lots of pain tomorrow"?
While I don't doubt that there are some circumstances
where these statements are true, I'd like to propose
another perspective. Instead of feeling pain today- in
hopes of staving off pain tomorrow- how would it be if
you, instead, sought joy today, AND more joy tomorrow?
Let me explain what I mean. Take Debra, a client of mine,
who is interested in getting more balance in her life.
Debra faithfully fills out "to-do" lists each night, and
runs around frantically each day, but, somehow, her lists
never seem to get any shorter. Debra works very hard each
day, and continually feels like she's behind- and must run
faster and faster to catch up. If asked, Debra will tell
you: 1) no, my life is not how I want it to be, and 2)
but I have to keep running around frantically because
if I don't, my life WOULD BE SO MUCH WORSE.
Are you noticing something here? Are you seeing that Debra
is suffering today, because she thinks, somehow, that she's
keeping herself from worse suffering tomorrow?
Do you ever do this? Tell yourself, "Well, I just better get
that done because if it's not done. Oh boy. that would be bad."
Does this work for you? (If so, great! Keep doing it.) If
not, then keep reading - let me suggest a better way.
Would you, just for a day, be willing to make yourself happy?
To sleep late if you wanted to? To eat ice cream for breakfast?
To spend the day puttering around outside? Or maybe having a
picnic with someone special?
If so, put that day in your calendar - right now. Life is
lived forward. By making today happy, you make it more
likely that tomorrow will be happy as well.
Remember, there is no gain when you're feeling pain.
Try learning from joy, instead.
Until next month,
Rachna
