Rachna's Note
August 2005
Dear Reader,
So we're into the final days of summer- which
seems to go by more quickly every year. I'm busy
preparing to present at the NET-IP conference
over Labor Day weekend. NET-IP is a national
organization of young, Indian professionals, and
I'll be traveling to Atlanta for the conference.
I'm speaking on relationships- specifically,
common dating mistakes and how to avoid them. It should
be fun.
Before that, though, I'm heading down to the ocean for
a few days of (much-needed) R&R. I hope you're finding
some time to do the same.
This month, our focus is on building resilience, which,
to me, is one of the most important self development
tasks we can ever undertake. Greater resilience often
means greater success.
Enjoy this issue and "see" you next month!
Warmly,
Rachna

What’s Your Resilience Rating?
(c) 2005
All Rights in All Media Reserved
Ok, so it’s now August and the lazy days of
summer are still hot, humid, and muggy
(at least here in Maryland). I haven’t felt
like doing much, and have been playing hooky
a little more often.
What I have been doing, though, is thinking
about the idea of resilience: the capacity
to bounce back from life’s rejections. Part of
stepping out of your comfort zone (see last
month’s issue if you missed the article) is
being able to tolerate rejection- and keep
moving ahead anyway.
If asked, I’d have to say that resilience
is the number one life skill that any of
us can have- it’s the skill that allows us
to push ahead to our goals and dreams, even
when people say “No!” along the way. Resilience
is the key factor in being able to overcome
temporary setback and keep it from becoming
permanent failure.
So how about you? What’s your resilience
rating? How quickly do you move on from events
that aren’t “quite right” to focusing on how
to move ahead from here? Resilience is a skill
that can be learned- and you get better with
practice.
How can you start boosting your resilience
rating? First, take extra special good care
of yourself. Next, manage your negative
feelings and critical self talk. Third,
keep a positive attitude- if you think about
the best, you very often get it. Fourth
(and this is super important)- prepare
yourself to try again. Analyze what happened
last time and make adjustments as needed.
Finally, you have to actually try again.
You can’t build resilience without it.
If there’s a place in your life that you’d like
to boost your resilience in, start now. When
you are no longer afraid of rejection, you are
able to take more risks. And with greater risk
often comes greater reward.
Therefore, better resilience= greater reward.
So what are you waiting for?
