Rachna's Note
June 2003
Dear Reader,
As summer begins here in the U.S., who couldn't use a little more space, and time?
This month's article aims to help you do both.
I hope you enjoy it.
See you next month,
Rachna

"I don't have time to exercise."
"I never sleep."
"I have to work so hard because I have too
much to do."
"It won't get done unless I handle it."
Any of these phrases sound familiar?
Did you know that "lack of time" is cited as the
number #1 reason people don't implement good health
habits? You might have heard, "I'm too busy to
exercise, cooking takes too much time, etc. etc."
You've also probably heard some arguments for the
`other side'- that everyone has the same 1440
minutes in a day, and that everyone finds time
for their priorities, etc.
While I agree, to some extent, with the second
group, I know, too, that I sometimes feel like
I don't have enough time, either- (which puts me
somewhere in the middle of both groups, I guess!)
Recently, a colleague pointed out an important
distinction to me- that of "space" v. "time".
"Space" might refer to the psychological "room"
we have to tackle a task or responsibility-
while "time" refers to the chronological,
linear, scheduling. My colleague suggested
that, when we say we have "no time", what
we're really saying is that we have no "space".
Most of us cram our datebooks- overfull-
with meetings, appointments, and a constant
sense of running from one place to the next.
There is little, if any, "space" to fit in
activities which nurture and sustain us.
"Space" might be thought of as "room" or
"openings" to allow our creativity and
expression to shine through. Space might
be defined by those moments in which you
"lose yourself" in the magic of whatever
you're doing- when you're focused only on
the here and now, rather than in the past
or the future.
Have you ever heard someone say that s/he
loves exercising- loves it- and you can't
figure out why, because each time you've
exercised, you've hated it. My guess, in
your case, is that you've created time for
exercise in your schedule- but not the
space to experience it.
Try this for the next few weeks: each hour,
no matter where you are, take 3 minutes to
fully experience what you're doing. Notice
your breathing- feel your body as it's
cradled by the chair- aim to clear your
mind for a bit- create more space in
everything you do.
With regular practice you might find, as I
did, that my productivity soared, and that,
all of a sudden, creating space created time.
