Rachna's Note
Dear Reader,
Hi and welcome to September. Sorry for the delay between last
newsletter and this one; there has been a lot of change happening
and it's taken me some time to get caught up. Anyway, maybe it's
a case of better late than never. (Hopefully). I hope this note
finds you well.
On this end, life has been both hectic and gratifying and full of
emotion. Probably the biggest news is that my grandmother passed
away at the end of July. She was 82, and a loving and wonderful
woman. Her passing was pretty sudden, which is always a little
more shocking, I think. I miss her.
Aside from this sad change, the latter part of Summer was also
marked by some exciting growth in my business. I was interviewed
for NBC's Today show (the piece aired on 8/23/06), my new book,
Overcome Rejection, The SMART Way is now available, and I was
just interviewed for Inc., Magazine. It's been really fun trying
out these new opportunities and learning more along the way.
Other than these things, life has been pretty calm.
So let's move on to the main focus of this month's newsletter. I
have to admit, I've had so many ideas of what to write that it
was difficult to pick just one thing. Since it seems the two
biggest themes I'm thinking about are change and growth, I
figured that would be a good focus for this issue.
I hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to reconnecting with you
next month.
Until then,
Rachna

Stepping into the Big Shoes

"Stepping into the Big Shoes" is a term that one of my former
coaches and I came up with to describe the process of growing
into a bigger life. It came from numerous conversations about the
growth and state of my consulting business; combined with new
opportunities and my needing some way to decide which
opportunities were the best to pursue. Of course, in my standard
fashion, I would have liked to pursue ALL of them; unfortunately,
that was not usually possible, or realistic.
All growth and every new opportunity pushes us past our comfort
zone, and takes us into a new environment where the pace may be a
bit faster, and the rules are certainly less clear. Anytime you
say "yes" to growing and changing, you take the chance of leaving
behind the old. This is always a source of tension; it's deeply
uncomfortable to leave the old (which seems to be working OK) to
move to the new (which is less certain, scary, and feels
vulnerable). Humans are only built for a certain amount of change
at any one time; but one thing is clear: you must change in order
to thrive.
Many of you have your own businesses and confront the necessity
to grow and change on almost a daily basis. You must continually
assess what is working and what isn't. You need to find ways to
balance the core functions of your business on an ongoing basis
with innovation and creativity. And, sometimes, as an
entrepreneur, you need to "grow up" a little bit to wear your
business identity more comfortably.
Even if you don't have a business, you will move through the same
cycle of growth in your daily life. If you're a parent, you may,
sometimes, have to lay down a rule or boundary which feels
foreign and uncomfortable. In your career, you may be asked to
assume more responsibility or take a more visible position within
the company- all of these require a bit of growth to comfortably
step into these new roles and responsibilities.
Along with new roles and options also comes new expectations,
both from yourself, and from others. When you have attained a
certain level of success, or status, the 'costs' of failure may
be higher; and certainly, the gains you seek may be somewhat
harder to attain. This doesn't mean you're on the wrong track.
Instead, it may just mean you need to allow some time and space
to gradually assume this new position or new identity.
It's ok to be scared. It's ok to be uncertain. It's ok to feel
vulnerable and unsure. These are all signs that you're moving to
a new level of your own growth, and that is always a good thing.
If there is a change you're contemplating for your life, consider
who you'd need to be in order to step fully into the "big shoes".
Who you'd need to be is, very often, more crucial than how you
will become that person. You can always take the right actions,
but they will be more successful if they are taken from the
inside-out; that is, aligned with your inner beliefs. When you
take the time to decide who you want to be, you can more
comfortably travel the trajectory of change, and, then, as a
result, feel more solid and grounded in your success. You'll save
yourself from that feeling of being an imposter.
Remember, anything you desire, you can achieve. This won't happen
without some change. You have to let go of what is, so that you
can create what could be.
