Rachna's Note
July 2006
Dear Reader,
Mid-summer and the summer doldrums have set in. I don't think
it's just me, but boy do I feel like playing hooky. Things are
piling up, being left undone, and I'm just hoping to find some
motivation pretty soon. At least by September.
About all I can contemplate accomplishing this month is writing
this newsletter and proofing my new book: Overcome Rejection: The
SMART way. So I'm just about halfway there. :)
In this issue, we focus on using the right tools for the job. I
hope this newsletter finds you in good health, good spirits, and
enjoying the summer. Enjoy this issue, and see you next month!
:)

Use the Right Tools for the Job
(c) 2006. Dr. Rachna D. Jain

This month, let's focus on the idea of using the right tools for
the job. This came to me just a couple of nights ago when I was
making dinner. What was significant about this was: first, I was
actually cooking dinner for a change- haven't had much time to do
that lately, second: I was cooking one of our first dinners in
our new house (YES!) and third, I got into that self observing
space that accompanies any kind of rote activity- that mental
space where you are performing a task and also processing
information.
So here's what I noticed: I was trying to use this really flimsy
spoon to break up some meat in the pan. Each time I'd press down,
the spoon would get all goofy and wouldn't work quite right. Now,
even though I know better, I kept trying to make this flimsy
spoon work- and it just wouldn't. At the same time, I was
thinking about what I'd write this month, and all of a sudden,
the idea "use the right tools for the job" popped into my head.
That felt like a great newsletter topic (and here we are!)
and....
It also moved me to toss the flimsy spoon and get a better one-
the right tool for the job. (So, not only was dinner saved, but
it also gave me a good working metaphor to share with you- cool,
huh?)
To me, the idea of using the right tool for the job refers to
having access to whatever resources you need to make your life
how you want it to be. If you have areas around the house which
need improving, the "right tools" might be hammer and nails (if
you are a do-it-yourselfer) or the phone number of a good repair
person (if you're not). In your business, the "right tools" might
be marketing avenues in which you shine, products or programs to
support your customers, or, sometimes, just some uninterrupted
time to plan and dream.
In your primary relationship, the "right tools" might be humor,
compassion, generosity, warmth. For your children, these tools
might be understanding, love, and affection. Whatever they are,
the right tools can make the work easier, faster, and better.
When you apply the "right tools" to any situation, you're more
likely to attain success. Where I learned not to use a flimsy
spoon to cook dinner, I also learned that making sure I have all
that I need to function at my best is a crucial factor for my
happiness and growth.
I would guess the same for you. Take a look at all your "tools"
and focus, this month, on applying only the right tools for the
job. Notice how much better you feel and how much more easily
things get done.
See you next month!
