What's the Payoff?

Do you know the number #1 reason why most people don't reach their goals? It's because the emotional payoff of reaching the goal is not big enough to justify all the work. If we extend this one step further, this means that, generally speaking, most people set goals that are "too small" and definitely "not all that compelling".
For example, one of my clients, Teresa, came to coaching with a goal of building her massage therapy practice. She was excited by the benefits of a full practice- having great clients, good income, and doing what she loves to do- massage. What wasn't "quite right", yet, was that she wanted all these outcomes- but was doing very little to attain them. At first, she presented the situation as if she "didn't know how" to market herself and her business. Over time, though, it became obvious that she DID know what to do- but she wasn't doing it.
After pointing out the gap between what she said she wanted (a full, thriving business) and what she was doing (very little consistent action), we began to explore the "payoff' for her not reaching her goals. Teresa's payoffs included: 1) avoiding discomfort (she didn't want to make cold calls, or seem "pushy") 2) holding on to her limiting beliefs (she had some small, niggly, doubts about her skills- and didn't want others to find out) and 3) fear (she didn't want her business to become TOO successful, so that she worked all the time and didn't have time for the rest of her life).
As you might see, the "payoff" for inaction was quite high. She never had to put herself "out there" or be uncomfortable, nor did she have to face the fear that she might not be as good as she thought, nor did she have to find a way to balance her life and her business.
Once these hidden payoffs became clear, Teresa was able to look at them more clearly and directly- and she realized, that, for her, some of these were silly reasons not to take action. She was able to see that having a full business would help her stretch and grow as a massage therapist- and as a businesswoman, and person- that she was committed to improving her skills, and that her skills would only improve with more client experience, and that, just maybe, a full business would allow her some "perks" so she could still maintain a strong life-balance.
In grasping her hidden payoffs for inaction, Teresa was then able to choose a new course of action. She has since moved into high gear, and is busy filling her business and having a lot of fun. As Einstein once said, "Nothing happens until something moves."- so, if you're feeling frozen and unable to move forward to your goals - look for the hidden payoff in staying right where you are. This, very often, will help you start to move forward once again.
